Something is happening. It’s like the whole world shifted and the greeting card which states “Life Begins at 40” is actually turning into a reality. Over the last few months we have seen Anne Hathaway, 43, play a 40 year-old lead in a rom com in The Idea Of You – where she not only looks amazing, but she is desired by a younger man and nonchalantly wears ripped jeans with long flowing curled hair with pride. And now Sienna Miller, 42, with her distinctive boho-style is taking one for the 40-plus team by collaborating with high street giant M&S, sending a message to everyone that life most certainly doesn’t stop as you hit middle age. And side note: you’re allowed to prefer M&S to Zara.
It was announced yesterday that the style icon will be launching a limited edition range with the iconic store and the internet is abuzz with excitement. TV stylist @nickyhamletonjones commented: “OMG A-mazing!! SM for M&S is genius, well done guys 👌🏻 xx” and @Emily_fd__ posting “So pleased with the M+S turnaround. A true British institution!” under the brand’s annoucement post.

The limited edition collection will be available in store and online from 6 June, and as a 40-year-old who has found herself preferring M&S recently, it is the positive sign I needed that maybe I’m not old after all. The images of Miller modelling the range prove that there is life in the old dog yet – M&S not Miller, obviously – and it weirdly feels like it’s speaking to me directly. The range includes a printed pyjama style co-ord, ruffled shirts and maxi dresses, all with the nod to the boho trend the actress is known and loved for. Flicking through the images the boho-esque styling stirred a nostalgic nod to days gone by, and I was instantly sent back to the middle of a field drinking wine from a paper cup in the summer of 2006.
It is such a big move for M&S, who I have to admit has been my go-to shopping destination for a while now, although maybe not openly. Sure, there was the viral bag, sandals and jeans that sent the TikTok generation into a tizz last year, but it was still seen as more of a novelty item than a serious fash-hun destination. Maybe it’s because there is still the chance that if you wear something to a family function, your 87-year-old nan could also be wearing it (granted that may be just my very stylish nan). But I’m hoping the tide is turning and you can now proudly declare where you have picked up your new favourite dress.
Yep, this emergence of the power 40s is more than just a cheesy line to get you through another decade, it is a movement. No longer is the 40-year-old being portrayed as the old, frumpy woman whose best years are behind her, instead it looks exciting and vibrant. There is an air of self assurance of these 40-something women like Miller, Hathaway, Jessica Biel, and even the Kardashian clan that life doesn’t stop as you hit the big 4-0. And for those of us here already, it’s a message of inspiration to women everywhere that this big birthday doesn’t mean it’s time to hide away and take up knitting (unless you want to). Personally I’m here for it.
